But what if you don’t have long hair? What if your hair is too short to make a traditional bun? Below you will find options to help you still achieve a ballet bun!

How to Make a Low Bun With Short Hair

Creating a low bun with short hair can be a bit challenging, but it’s definitely possible. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a low bun with short hair:

1. Start with clean, dry hair: Make sure your hair is clean and dry before you begin styling. If your hair is too slippery, you can use some texturizing spray or dry shampoo to add grip.

2. Tease the crown: Gently tease the hair at the crown of your head to add some volume and texture. This will help create the illusion of a fuller bun.

3. Gather your hair: Brush your hair back and gather it at the nape of your neck. Use a comb or your fingers to smooth out any bumps or tangles.

4. Secure with an elastic band: Once you’ve gathered your hair, use a small elastic band to secure it in a ponytail. Make sure the ponytail is positioned low, right at the base of your neck.

5. Create a bun shape: Take the ponytail and twist it tightly until it starts coiling around itself. Continue twisting and coiling until you’ve created a bun shape.

6. Secure the bun: Use bobby pins to secure the bun in place. Insert the pins vertically into the bun, making sure to catch both the bun and your hair at the base to keep it secure. You may need several bobby pins to hold everything in place.

7. Adjust and style: Gently tug on the bun to loosen it slightly and create a more relaxed look. You can also pull out a few face-framing pieces or wisps of hair to soften the style and make it more flattering.

8. Set with hairspray: Once you’re happy with the shape and style of your low bun, use a light mist of hairspray to set everything in place and prevent any flyaways.

Remember, the length of your hair may affect the final look of the low bun, and it might be a bit smaller or less voluminous than if you had longer hair. Feel free to adapt the steps to suit your hair type and length, and don’t be afraid to experiment and find a style that works best for you.

How to Make a High Bun With Short Hair

Creating a high bun with short hair can be a bit challenging, but it’s still possible to achieve a stylish look. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make a high bun with short hair:

3. Gather your hair: Brush your hair up and gather it on the top of your head. Use a comb or your fingers to smooth out any bumps or tangles.

4. Secure with an elastic band: Once you’ve gathered your hair, use a small elastic band to secure it in a ponytail. Make sure the ponytail is positioned high, closer to the crown of your head.

7. Adjust and style: Gently tug on the bun to tighten and refine the shape. You can also use your fingers or a comb to smooth any flyaways or uneven sections.

8. Set with hairspray: Once you’re satisfied with the high bun, use a light mist of hairspray to set everything in place and maintain the style throughout the day.

Remember, the length of your hair may affect the final look of the high bun, and it might be smaller or less voluminous compared to longer hair. Adapt the steps to suit your hair type and length, and feel free to experiment with different techniques to find a style that works best for you.

How to Make a Fake Bun With Short Hair

Using a hairpiece is a great way to create a fake bun for short hair and add length and volume. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you use a hairpiece to make a fake bun for short hair:

1. Choose a hairpiece: Select a hairpiece that matches your hair color and desired style. You can find hairpieces specifically designed for creating buns, such as bun extensions or a scrunchie style hairpiece. (This is a scrunchie style hairpiece that I personally use with great results!)

2. Prepare your natural hair: Start with clean, dry hair. If your hair is too slippery, you can apply some texturizing spray or dry shampoo to add grip. You can also tease the hair at the crown to create more volume and texture.

3. Gather your hair into a ponytail: Brush your hair back and gather it into a ponytail. Position the ponytail where you want the fake bun to sit. It can be at the back of your head or higher up, depending on your preference. If your ponytail is long enough to make a tiny bun do so following the above directions.

4. Secure the hairpiece: Place the hairpiece over your very short ponytail or tiny bun, making sure the attachment is positioned at the base of the ponytail. If you’re using a bun extension, follow the specific instructions provided with the hairpiece.

5. Blend and secure: Gently spread and arrange your natural hair over the hairpiece to blend it seamlessly. Use bobby pins to secure any loose or short strands in place. Insert the pins vertically into the hair, catching both your natural hair and the hairpiece to hold everything in place.

6. Adjust and style: Once the hairpiece is securely in place, you can adjust and style the bun to your liking. Use your fingers or a comb to smooth out any bumps or uneven sections. You can also gently tug on the hair to create a fuller and more voluminous appearance.

7. Set with hairspray: To ensure everything stays in place, finish by applying a light mist of hairspray to set the style and prevent any flyaways.

Using a hairpiece allows you to achieve a full and voluminous bun, even with short hair. Practice and experiment with different hairpieces and styling techniques to find the one that suits you best.
